AIDS in Africa

Liston Meintjes 1946 (Pretoria)

The march is on, it can't be stopped and villages lie bare.
In silence silence spreads with wailing orphans trailing their mother's coffin.
The weather's fine: the rain provides good harvest
for sufferers who know not yet the silent killer's presence
donated kindly in the night, while drums beat for the latest victim.
Time knows no time when hope is lost of ripening and reaping.
Instead the maggots feed on wind-fallen fruit with top-most side unchanged
until the ghost from underneath devours and shrivels into death
the silent walking corpse.
The march is on, it can't be stopped - in God's unnatural holocaust.
