So this is love/abuse?

What would you do… If you found out that someone you knew was a rapist?
Would that make you see them in a different light?
Would you still be their friend.. believe their lies?
Would you feel different if you knew my plight?

What would you do… if you found out that someone you knew was a rape victim,
Would you treat them differently?
Would you tip toe around on egg shells,
Would you treat them that much more gently?

What would you say to someone … Who saw themselves as no more than damaged goods?
Would you understand them or would you choose to ignore?
Would you tell them to simply get over it,
That they can’t hurt you anymore.

It is easier said than done,
The damage that they’ve left behind is real.
Although we remain strong,
Something like this takes time to heal.

I remember it like it was yesterday,
When a first love would burn.
That just made it worse,
Because I didn’t realise when he’d turn.

We loved each other,
This was normal right?
So why was I so afraid?
Why did I feel the need to fight?

It was just that one time,
He would never mean to hurt me.
My love was like a shroud of mist,
Clouding my eyes so that I couldn’t see.

But everything seemed to go wrong,
Please don’t leave me alone with him I’m scared.
I didn’t expect to see this side of him,
I wasn’t prepared.

Why do you treat me this way?
Both you and your friends?
He won’t do it again…
No, he will make amends.

Again ang again it carries on,
And I’d given up hope.
I cannot keep doing this,
I just can’t cope.

No wait please don’t cry,
I didn’t mean what I said.
No, I’m sorry,
Just forget about it instead.

What? How is it my fault?
No I’m not crazy!
Well maybe.. I don’t know,
It is a bit hazy.

Back and forth it goes,
For what seems like years.
Until I can no longer bare it,
Until I can no longer ignore my fears.

It took all that I had,
But I made that final move.
No matter what you say,
Even if you disapprove.

Now we stand strong together,
After all of theses tear-stained years.
Moving on with our lives,
Now that we’ve faced our fears.

But this is a scar that we must bare,
A wound that shall not heal.
All it takes is one little reminder,
To show the truth that we conceal.

Although the battle rages on constantly,
We don’t let it define who we ought to be.
We use our pain in our art,
And set ourselves free.
