Broken

I see
From the outside looking in
At the neat and tidy house
At the pictures on the walls and on the counters
At the smiles and conversations with the neighbors

I see
From the inside
All the movie nights and the nighttime fights
All the family hugs and dinners
Where one move makes every smile thinner

I feel scared
About my self and my future
Who I am and who I’ll be
I look at them and I know

Cut from the same cloth
But I have the tattered pieces
Sewn together with a crooked needle
The knot so small it could easily unravel

I take the ugly pattern and I stuff it in a pocket
And I fear the times it slips out and comes apart
And I yell
And I scream
And I cry
And I pick up the ugly, broken pieces and sew them back together with that crooked needle

And I pray it doesn’t come out again
I pray that I’m not just that ugly cloth
Even though deep down I know I am
