I Did It Anyway

Samuel Roberts 1954 (Fort Worth)

You know the rivers of passion flowed no matter how I tried
To contain myself, to right myself as I sensed the sinking boat
And knew that disaster was going to come. I did it anyway.

And I sidestepped my own good common sense, knowing that
My judgment was about as good as a drunken seashell. I knew
That the end would not be a good one. I did it anyway.

And in so doing I couldn’t help but bust out laughing as I
Looked in the mirror and saw the fool before me and knew
That the fool would be a fool again and again. I did it anyway.

Perhaps I am proud of my foolhardiness or else didn’t know any
Better, or it is a Divine action that cannot be stopped any more
Than bitter wind or incautious consideration. But this I know.

I did it anyway.

Samuel Roberts
