Feathers in a feather’s flight

The memories of times-gone-by deluge my mind amiss
A universe of puzzles that spirals up, rebuilding our bliss
From amber leaves twirling the wind of passing cars,
The past remains behind, adorned with fleur-de-lis and gleaming stars
I look outside; it’s dark, but safe and full of peace.

Then what is it?  Who rang the chimes?
Floating self-righteously above, the moon reminds me of blue times
I shut the windows, closed the blinds.
Your mind is calm; it starts to slip under the moon’s entice
Please stay with me; why are your hands as cold as ice?

The light under your door is burning bright into the night
I don’t disturb your sleep in which you fell so deep
At your bedside, without a sound,
I kneel and dare to ask God to grant my last appeal

I’m waiting quietly and don’t call out your name
Ioana is not trying to flicker back the candle flame
I don’t perceive your father’s screams colliding with the sirens in the street
The ambulance goes by, passing the house on 23rd Eve Street
And out-of-doors, on our front lawn, Laura cannot be weeping
For high above her head, the skies are calm and sleeping

The nothingness fills steadily my euphoric mind
I am tranquil and light as drifts of feathers in a feather’s flight
Outside, the Moon retires fast but not before it whispers: away he passed
My dream collapses in its entire vast.
He is too young and handsome….  Must he return to dust?
By now, the sun is glaring through the glass; its shadow makes my bedroom’s ceiling tall
Outside, cheerful larks the weary night recall
A tough reminder that we failed to see life’s writing on the wall.
