Zoe (New Year's Eve)

my hands were shaking
sitting on your bed
one green light, the lamp on your table, shining
we cast colorful shadows on our own skins
the curves of you echoed in green
I was, oh, God, nervous
Two-o'clock-in-the-morning bold, but shaking
trying to gather myself and reveal
beautiful secrets, a wish, a dream, a whisper
and you laughing, seeing me shake, but your eyes
searching me, looking for danger, for hurt,
worried, expecting hate or sorrow and
finding love bright-burning, if a bit
unsteady and shy, uncertain of your reaction
what you'd look like, what your eyes would say
when you heard the half-laughed, half-whispered, heavy words
I was standing, fighting for balance, on the brink of you
afraid if I spoke too loud, I would fall and lose myself in your eyes
