Your Hidden Past
Softly grace your finger
upon the spine,
flip through the pages
and try to understand
the deep meaning of it all
locked inside fragile paper walls.
The books breathe
as you caress them,
whispering too quietly
what happens at the end.
Well-worn and dusty,
that book has been sitting
there. Why wait to open it?
What do you fear will spill
from its yellowing pages
and its crimson cover?
It’s been too long
since you have looked,
by now, surely it’s time:
break open and bring the past.
