Writing is breathing

she never allows life's demands
to tear her away from the hours
she spends writing poems
once her house burned around her
but she squinted her eyes and
held her breath against the fumes
and would not leave until
the final lines were scribbled
down and burned in her hands
she says writing is breathing
food for her hungry soul
a daily rehearsal for
one day finding Heaven
she says all these things
without once lifting her head
from the notebook
without once feeding her eyes
the glitter of the world
or its myriad temptations
