Working Too Hard
Jumping into the fray,
holding onto nothing,
she grasps for purchase
on an iron wall of surrender.
She feels as though
she’s slid into someone else’s skin,
wriggling to keep the water
below her gasping mouth.
Like being born into a broken body,
like assuming an illness,
she has taken on new responsibilities
and won’t shake them from her mind.
She’s bleeding before the wound,
she’s running ahead of the cart,
searching for Fate
even before her time has come.
