Words

You ever listen for a word left out
Or word put in that never should have been?
I'm nowhere near the end and there's no doubt
I'll leave one out, perhaps, I'll put one in.
Already hear omissions hum aloud,
The chant of vacancies, the silences
Or hear inclusions pleading far from proud,
Ashamed they're there, some in parenthesis.
Here it again? Perhaps you just misread.
You surely heard the emptiness of it!
How can I tell you what I haven't said?
It's up to you if does or doesn't fit.

In speaking, writing, words say things astray;
It's only words astray that cannot say.
