Wonderland

When I was younger than four
I played in my bed
hid under the covers
that swam over my head

at night my ceiling would
come alive
shooting stars in the
distance,
watching bright comets dive

I saw footprints across
the dusty moon
red flowers in the craters -
a chalky bloom

my sheets were like
waves
that carried me away
into the dreams of
wonderland
that woke up to play

while everyone else
was sound asleep
I stayed up with my teddy bear
and counted the sheep
after 100, I closed my eyes
soon opening them to a world
of make-believe and
surprise

some nights I lie awake,
with an army by my side
of endless toys and fairy tales
until my nightmares
ran and hide

but other nights,
I'll fall right into dreams
shooing off the sheep and
wishing away the sun
beams

and other nights I'll dream
awake
of happy endings and ocean's
wake

deep blue dreaming and
soft glazed sighs
of wonderland -
just close my eyes
