When John Got a Job

An abrupt exhalation
of numb relief
too deep for feeling;
one knot untied
in the tangled mass
that is the pit
of my gut.
Fingers slowly
straightening--
awareness
creeping into consciousness
of a melting
moisture, subtle
color, twitch
of movement
in our frozen landscape
of too many yesterday
winters.
