What To Get Her

She stepped into the half-empty room
Five minutes before the janitor's broom
Would drag by, with the door closed,
And every seat filled.
She took out her notebook and pencil,
Set it on her desk and talked with
The student next to her. Smith
Talked about
History and the door reopened. She
Held her legs inside her desk
As students filtered out from the rows.
The student who sat next to her tapped her on the elbow,
He asked her for the second part, he
Was busy during it, she
Stopped to the side, opened her book
Again and let him look as he took
Her notes and copied them.
So many times he got distracted;
He didn't care what the teacher just said,
He much rather catch up on other things
That were far more important.
He gave her a sly glance;
 He wasn't sure she was starting to get mad,
That practically every other class, the same thing
Happened; he would stop her and ask
For the notes. He thought he had to pay her back
Some way to make up for his "stepping away",
But he barely knew her and couldn't quite say
What she would like for her kind ways.
"How do I know?" he asked himself. It would take
Until another time, when he pays no mind again,
Because for her, he had no idea what to get.
