Waves from a Window

On the isthmus cane
Field tassels shimmer
West-side slivers sprout
Along the pali out of habit

Hawaiians gave names
To winds in certain valleys
With an excess of the invisible

When I first saw and remembered
Sea from sky thousands of dead
Fish dappled the surface
I didn't know there
Was a word for the ocean's desire
To leap out of itself

Now looking
Down on - leaving -
My island I am all whitecaps
