Vanity Fair

Are we the captains of our feelings
Or slaves to our lusts?

Just a convenient excuse
For a free for all
In the dark corners of the mind
Where our conscience stalls
Free to make our own beds
Wherever our heads may fall

The comfortable solution
To the complexity of truth
Simplified in one fell swoop
The absolute proof that the pen
Is indeed mightier than than the sword

And as we all drink deeply
From the well of knowledge
No one ever bothered
To consider the source

Delusion and hallucinations
As we stare at our own faces
And swear that the reflection is a deception
And reject our glorious image
In the name of liberty and protection

The memories and mosaics
That hang on history's halls
Remnants of mirrors from the past
That still remain long after they fall...
Shattered glass splayed on the path
As our intentions are finally bared

Now we know...

The road to Hell
Is only paved with grief
All the way to the vanity fair
