Twenty-One (21)
Twenty-one
time of developmental purgatory done,
full, legal adult,
can do anything I want,
go to clubs, party, have sex, smoke,
buy cars, go to casinos, go on planes, fly coach,
in college, working hard for a piece of paper,
trying to get one before it becomes worthless,
at the rate the economy's declining,
I lie awake at night wondering,
when I graduate, will I find a job, find success?
or be stuck in poverty, drowned in debt?
If I do find a job in my field, will I succeed?
Will I make enough money to achieve the American Dream?
that's advertised on billboards, magazines, and TV,
that they say is so easy to get?
or will I be stuck working hard for nothing until death,
supporting lazy-*ss degenerates on welfare and food stamps?
Will I ever find my knight in shining armor?
or a jackass in tin-foil, cheap cologne, “swag” and weak stridor?
with the rising rates of divorce,
is marriage really the right choice?
with the rising cost of living, healthcare,
and childcare,
terrible education system, fashion, and negative role models,
this world may be too dangerous,
to bring a child into,
technology's advancing,
value of the American dollar declining,
ethics and morals being thrown completely away,
people doing whatever,
saying YOLO, throwing their hands in the air,
“You only live once”, have fun, be reckless forever,
In all the years I've walked and lived on this ball of soil and water called Earth,
is this the generation of “people” of which I must share residence with?
If so, the part of living called “life” will not be easy
