Travel Light
Today settled itself on a rim, the edge
of this rusty wheel, with a look
at the wings of back then, down there
next to my feet.
They must have dried by now,
clearly are at rest, as if
mud never splashed up.
Still, in stories
they can lift
a scent, a swirl, a chill.
In a breeze old life sternly flies,
circles up above
like grey flocks of driven doves,
your head their landing
when you least expect.
But not today. In fact
all pigeons finally homed so it seems.
I'll find time,
clean up and make some plans.
At my feet I organize, push and pack
to part and travel light.
Today takes the vivid ones and leaves
a boring bunch behind.
