To My Dog

You're back so soon again! Your errand done?
How quick the gray world, on your morning look
Amazing, dutiful, unfailing one,
Turns into one enormous wonder book!

Come in, my faithful friend and loving guest
And search my heart, to it a comfort be;
Come in, you breathless one from morning quest
And curl around my feet to pleasure me.

You eloquent but shaggy loveliness,
What lured you here from bygone ages back?
What call was it? What dream beyond a guess
Would bring you here from wolfish bivouac?

Was it your need or ours? Ordained a trail
Of faith and hope and love that should not fail.
