This Morning

I woke up and struggled out of bed;
It’s these mornings that make me not
Want to keep hauling myself into the dreary
Monotony of the everyday business world.
I stumble out into a crisp winter dawn,
My bare feet touch concrete and send icy
Jolts up through my body.
I rub grainy sleep from my eyes
And glance momentarily up at the sky---
Immediately I am captivated by the beauty before me.
A dozen colors paint the heavens
As the sun rears its glorious head.
Roan red spreads in chalky strokes
While orange, purple, and yellow
wisp about the sky in playful swirls.
A breeze, like a breath from the sun,
Fills my lungs with new life and energy.
This morning, different from all others,
I am awake. I am here to face the day.
