The Young Man

The family gathered around, figured it wouldn't be long
But no matter how much she hurt, my mother held on.
The counselors came in and spoke to us on a whim
Looked my brother in the eye, said it was all up to him.

He'd graduate soon and Mom was aware
Her death might affect him and keep him from there.
So instead she held on; longer than she should
To keep from spoiling his big day, if only she could.

He came to her room and sat in the chair
Told her he loved her and smoothed down her hair.
He offered her words that she needed to hear
He'd graduate for her, so she shouldn't fear.

Even though she'd move on, he'd know she was near
And when they called his name, she would definitely hear.
With tears in my eyes, I watched in dismay
As my little brother became a man that day.
