The Warrior

Wake up early with the bright rising sun.
Picking up and cleaning the well-worn gun.
The wounds are deep and cause much pain.
Stumbling along the road as it starts to rain.

Painfully thinking of all the battles long past.
Time starting slowly to slip from his grasp.
Throat burning and so dry he cannot even talk.
Slowly moving forward he continues to walk.

Memories pull a single tear that rolls from his eye.
Finally realizing that now he will surely die.
Now, beaten he stops and in the grass does he lay.
And, waits for the release of death to come to him this day.
