the suitcase

i'm like the keys that sleep
in the pocket of a forgetful man

from the tiny keyhole of my lover's suitcase
i can only see the magnanimous abyss inside
and sniff the stale aroma of fragmented moth balls

through this miniscule threshold
the courage of light permeates

she has packed nothing in her suitcase...
but what was left inside from our last dispute

the drycleaners' plastic wrapper

the spare key to the suitcase

and the matchbox from the hotel
along with the soap and face cloth

and an askance away i see faintly
the chewed pencil i threw in .......
......................in case she decides to write
