The Santa Rita Pool
Lies empty underneath a Tucson sun
Busy making hay of straying grasses
Who ranged beyond the shade of trees;
Making stone of petrifying benches,
Shedding paint and blistered splinters
To decorate in mosaic pieces
The smooth blue tub naked empty.
The Santa Rita Pool
Fills with winter's sun and
Shimmering-waves of radiation.
Shadows mark its lines and creases
Highways for the desert dust
To fill the pool with arid landscapes
Instead of chopping waters
Floating children's laughter
