The Robin

Mine eyes observe a lofty robin proud;
To eyes untried his scarlet breast seems fraught
With scorn, disdain, conceit; he snubs the crowd
To muse and ponder somber, solemn thoughts.
Alas! This vision sees not fautlessly,
It clouds and shrouds the robin's longing glance
What bliss t'would be! To join so joyfully
The prattling russet wrens below in dance.
The wrens, who can't perceive the robin's need
For friends, or open ears in which to pour
The heart's desires, cavort among the reeds
While lonely robin waits for something more.

That robin that remains aloof above
Will never know nor trust another's love.
