The reunion

The years have flown and now they're gone,
 And so are the charms that were mine.
 I didn't want to go, to be all alone,
 Taking that step back in time.
 I bought the Clairol and the blush,
 Some mascara and nail polish, too.
 I bought a girdle to hold me in;
 I thought I looked thirty-two.
 The big night came and I stood poised
 To gaze at the youths of my past.
 I searched the room for faces I knew;
 "Who are these people?", I asked.
 I looked through the eyes of long ago,
Searching for teenagers I'd know.
 But instead there were strangers of all shapes and sizes,
 With hair the color of snow.
Fat, bald, wrinkled, and pale:
 I couldn't put a face with a name.
 Here were all my high school friends,
 But no one looked the same!
 For a moment I took a leap back in time,
 Then fell to the floor with a crunch.
 Reality came and shook me sane
 When I realized I was one of this bunch!
So I lift my glass to reunions,
 And toast the years that have tolled.
 But I'm staying away from reunions;
 I don't want to be that old!

Michele Beamguard Guarino

I was raised on Mother Goose and the rhymes of childhood. With each of life's experiences I've tried to put into words how I feel about everyday happenings. Poetry seems the best avenue for this endeavor. At my age in life, I have experienced much. Not all happy memories, not all unhappy. The privilege this website affords me opens my heart; therefore, causing me to put pen to paper, transforming my life experiences into words. Thoughts are food for the mind. Poetry is food for the soul. more…
