The Prisoner

The wraiths of night become me
A prisoner in my chains
The iron feels like a fathers love
Does when it's estranged
A dungeon of my own making
I know how every stone
Holds fast as Desperation
Does the hurt it loves
The cool of metal beckons
My cheek to feel the same
And in my misadventures
I link another chain
The futility in trying
The wastefulness of dreams
I count the nights as safety
They know not where I've been
Tumbling down wells
In trenches counting bones
Numb to horror I am sure
This life is not my own
The fuse it drives me blindly
How can the eye of doubt
See beyond the remedy
That death is all about
The trickle of my blood
Reaches in the womb
But I would kill the messenger
My heart it is a tomb
Victory was mine
But only when I fled
I have returned once again
To live inside my head
There is no ease to violence
Inflicted on the soul
And I am weakened by this war
That assumes all control.
