The Painter in the Park

He monitors the spectrum
Of scattered sunlight
On the fresh surfaces of earth lately cooled by rain.

He concludes there are scraps of blue
Color lying neatly glued
To the planet's surfaces;

But he knows that the blue
Contains chemical wastes,
High-risk spookiness

In dangerous liquids,
And these thoughts are hard
On his love for blue:

French blue, aquamarine,
Cobalt blue, teal blue,
Periwinkle, turquoise,

Gentian, navy, powder blue,
Violet blue, indigo,
Pastel blue, and midnight.
