The Fog

Andy Lyle 1951 (Londonderry)

The fog hugged tight the street lamp light

Like two lovers in a country lane

To be outdoors on such a night

It makes your eyes to strain

To try to make out ghostly shapes

Of flitting furtive figures

It seems beneath the fog hugged light

These figures just seem bigger

The horn sounds out from river boat

Like an elephant about to charge

Its eerie tone warns other boats

Here comes the long coal barge

How far the sound it travels

On the foggy evening air

The dampness fills our nostrils

And forms a layer upon our hair

The cars proceed with caution

While pedestrians weave to and fro

Dancing almost as they walk

In the lamp lights eerie glow

Then as quickly as it had arrived

The dense fog sets us free

And once again our straining eyes

Can now quite clearly see
