The Flame

We all have an eternal flame
One that burns so hot and deep,
Reminding us of days gone by
And of fond memories we keep.
A flame that is alight and burning
Crackling or smouldering in the night,
Of how we may distinguish it
Now that is the deserving fight.
In our past the fire may be unjust
A moment we lose our very senses,
But unto the present it is regret
When up go all our defences.
A bad dream returning to haunt
Or a fantasy of lust incomplete,
It is today we have to face it
Or by god our soul shall deplete.
For that flame that burns so deep
Our past may become our future way,
Living in contentment or that of fear
And allowing our heart its final say.
