The Evil

The Evil is here.
We name it winter.
Its presence is the bitter wind
That numbs your extremities.
Clouds greedily devour the sun
Allowing darkness to reign supreme.
Trees stand bare as if scared to death.
The sounds of life have disappeared
Having run south for warmer climates.
Death surrounds.
Nothing grows.
The evil won't allow it
In spite of the Evil, many brave soul
Stand up to face it.
They layer their armor: Scarfs, toboggans and overcoats.
Heaters and "Hot Hands" their weapons.
Some of us teeter on bravery and stupidity.
Some love the Evil and the death it brings.
I've just laced up my boots and plan to step
out that door into the cold.
