Sunstone

Poem

SUNSTONE
( Sunstone :- a stone that glitters when sunlight
falls on it. A moonstone is one that melts when moonlight
falls on it. Here the poet considers the youth as powerful as
the sunstones with ability to react.)

                             K.R.BALAKRISHNAN

Blowing bellows incessantly, we remain
With sore eyes,
To malleate the reddened pig-iron of day
In memory of
The thickly fire-flowered bright sun.
.

Roaming about in this burial ground
Of solid darkness
Wrapped up by dense mist in our eyes
Losing our footings  in the tempest
Of sky-high uproar of the barbarians

Lifeless and motionless
With the stream of struggling blood
In our numb and cold veins,
Sleeping in exhaustion , with grey eyelashes
Of hard-earned self-respect,

Did you not come here then
Like a flame-bird
Showering intense rays and benign hopes?

Did you not become the heat inside all lovers;
A thrill for the fresh and tender leaves ;
Making a fiery day-time for the foxes and owls,
And a pillar between the sluttish and the noble ?

Did you not remain an earwig for those
Who took false meaningless oaths ?
A heat engine inside the heads of gamblers
And a perpetual nice scripture for
Those who hid in forests ?

Today in your absence, the megalomaniacs
Prevail everywhere pressing and crushing us ;
The demons move about in dull nights
With projected round eyes and threaten the earth
And trap us in death-ropes
And pierce us onto their sharp eloquence.

In cities, the evil spirited angry traders
In palaces , the widowed snakes
In work spots, the strutting men
Flowering like certain trees
Humbled  by kicks of women !

Oh Sun! remember our mother
Who hugged us to her full breasts
And fed us with the elixir ,
Who gave us warmth through her bosom
Like birds under their wings
During disasters of heavy downpour;

Who fed us from the all-time full udder
Even after milking.

That mother sleeps tired today
With drained udder and dry bosom ;
With empty stomach and hard-opened eyes
Growth-stopped words with enforced silence
Immersed in night-blindness
Made penurious.

Come,
It is time for you to come as a blaze
With red fuming flames
And lay these miscreants
On your emotional bed of thorns of agitated fury
Until their minds are loosened
Like mud-volcanic.

We look forward to your home-coming with ember frenzy
We wait for your wrath;
Where is your giant single-wheeled chariot ?
Where is your seven-horsed chariot ?
Where is your seven-tongued fire fleet ?
Where is your cosmic frying-pan ?
Wake up !  open your eyes millions
And change us into ashes
To raise us up into the sky.

We remain ready for transformation
Into mountains of fire
And become sunstones to calcinations ;
Will you not take a rebirth and shower beams
Of ignitable light ? Our Sun?
