Street Dancer

Kathy A. Wittman 1949 (Tennessee)

I caught a mere glimpse of you,
body swaying, feet tapping
to dark, rhythmic chords
of murky, soulful jazz
on Bourbon Street.

My camera clicked as I saw
those whirling, myriad sensations,
horse and buggy veering away
from the bustling crowds
on Bourbon Street.

Then I heard your accusations,
intense scorn in your ebony eyes,
astonishing me as I listened
to your obscene demands
on Bourbon Street.

A dollar in exchange for a photo
of your strutted pose; I departed,
with perplexed contemplation,
touched by your pathos
on Bourbon Street.
