Strangers

They came
In the middle of the night.
And no matter how I tried,
I couldn't hide my fright.

They brought a gun
And said "I'll shoot!"
I couldn't breathe,
One yelled "Where's the loot?!"

My heart stopped,
Back and forth my eyes paced.
And I couldn't stop
The way my thoughts had laced.

Running would do no good.
Our dogs raged
But the robbers gave no attention
To the German Shepard barking in their cage.

Thinking as if there was no way out,
The morning sun broke the fright.
I was awake now,
Safe in morn's light.
