Still Mine

I looked in the mirror to see,
If who I saw was really me.
Those dark brown eyes
Were dad's own eyes
The same he'd given me.
My nose was cute as it could be
This, mom bequeathed to me.
I grinned with glee, what did I see?
Two rows of teeth still white,
But alas, from a lateral view
Had developed an overbite.
I parted my hair, oh no!
The roots were white as snow,
Though the ends were black
They luster lacked
From the layers of dye I stacked.
No wrinkles yet, I mused
Must be all the wrinkle cream I used.
My hips are broader now,
My waistline almost gone
Mom says my thighs are slabs of flab
With loss of muscle tone.
My knees are stiff, my shoulders sore
Arthritis is finally knocking at my door.
And the bunions I didn't choose
Have carved out niches in my shoes
Though my eyes are framed with glasses now
And my beauty has faded with time,
As I look in the mirror,
The face I see, is still mine.

Barbara Cadogan

I am a Registered Nurse, and first started to write poetry when I was about 18 years old. I have written several poems on a variety of subjects, and enjoy poems that are light and filled with humor. I feel that a good poem like a painting, is able to evoke a variety of emotions, whether sad or cheerful, angry or sympathetic. My goal in life is to learn as much as I can, and to spread peace and good cheer to many. Above all, to be respectful and helpful to my fellow man. more…
