Spring Prom

Once, early spring said to the mockingbird,
Let's have a ball for carolina wren,
If you'll be kind enough to spread the word,
Tomorrow morn in elderberry glen.

Before the sun arose, from bush and tree,
The birds arrived, each fresh from cozy nest,
While singing very sweetly songs of glee,
Each one dressed smartly in their sunday best.

The chickadee danced with the bluebird's wife
And awkward hootowl with the brazen jay,
The cardinal with wren, extolling life,
Then wished each other, very happy day.

They danced and sung and frolicked all day long,
Then flew to nests, fatigued from dance and song.
