Skylark
Into the sky you leap, then out
And into infinity and light,
Streaming long lines of blissful tension
Left to hum behind your ascension,
Floating so far above our sight
No human eye can follow your route.
I hear your joyous song in the thunder
Of turbines, the deep-voiced motor’s roar.
And you twinkle, twinkle slowly away
In gleaming farewell, yet seeming to stay,
Not moving, just growing less as you soar,
Till a last sparkle’s all that remains for our wonder.
Then in you wink! With deafening cry,
You wend your way homeward to where you belong,
Showering earth with mad sparks of starshine
And sunlight, blithe spirit of human design.
Hail to thee, firebird! Sing your great song,
Skylark of the greater sky!
