Sky Lions

I love to watch them trot the sky,
Bound restlessly about,
Shake tawny manes and take the air
To exercise their royalty
In eminent domain. Unruly rulers
By the right divine,
Wherever they live, they own it,
And wherever they sit
Is the head of the table.

They’re kings from claw to crown,
Bald or golden, with dignity to spare.
Why, even when they stoop,
They never stoop. Pride of the sky,
The lords of a graceful race,
(Like lightning and thunder,
Their smiles and laughter)
Avatars of the gods, no question,
Are these birds, truly Jovial!
