Silent Declaration

Tonight I’ll make my audience
Among the stars that glisten.
I’ll speak before the grassy hills,
For only they will listen.

I’ll speak in interest of all men,
Though none of them will hear.
I’ll speak with admirable conviction,
Though just the bugs will cheer.

Here I’ll state my resolution
Beneath the shroud of night,
And though my nation can’t aver it,
For it I’ll pledge to fight.

I’ll speak for all my countrymen,
Though I am all alone.
I’ll make my righteous purpose clear,
Though it will not be known.

If anyone would hear my oath,
They’d stand and shout “Amen!”
They’d set my words to verse and song,
If only they were penned.

Oh! if they knew just one line,
They’d hail me as the Christ.
But I have no want of disciples.
The cool winds will suffice.

So now, I’ll make a declaration,
Where none will laud or rue it:
There’s nothing in a person’s word,
If only he will do it!
