Purest Prayer
Eyelids clinched like fists holding back tears
Beads of sweat stream through a wrinkled forehead
Pursed lips against trembling teeth
Ears def to the sirens
Straining to hear an answer
To your purest prayer
“Oh God, don't let her go
I'd give up my eternity
To give her just one more night
For one more dream
God take the very beat of my heart
And pull her back from heaven's gates
Lord I'd make this my last breath
To see her chest rise again”
In the silence you sit
With her clutched against your chest
Trying to press the rhythm of your heart into hers
Her soft exhale brings you back
Finally you open flooded eyes
Gently cradled in your arms she looks at you
Blue eyes once filled with heaven's light
Now turned to gray glass reflecting your desperate stare
