Pretend Nothing Happened

Let's say you misunderstood,
or that I hadn't said a word.
Maybe pain brought me to my knee,
and it was the wind you heard.

Perhaps it was just a game,
something to amuse the crowd.
Can't you simply laugh it off,
and admonish me out loud?

We could pretend nothing happened,
and simply forget this eve.
It'll be discretely forgot,
if you promise not to leave.

But, what if I did propose,
and each word came from my heart?
Would you then laugh and say no,
watching my hopes fall apart?
