Parenthood

Len Lewis 1943 (Port of Spain, Trinidad)

The sortie into parenthood
Is but a twist of fate.
Go find an interest if you would
Then you start out to date.
At first it might not look too good
So you decide to wait,
Or find another if you could
Who'd be a better mate.
It's sometimes based on where you stood
Or where you drank or ate;
Yet somewhere in the world, there should
Exist one's perfect mate.
But it's unlikely those two would
In time and place relate,
Phenomenon not understood;
Hence the percentage rate
Of broken unions, even blood,
And matrimonial hate.
So thank your lucky stars you should,
If fortune's twist of fate
Endowed your kids with parenthood,
Of time-enduring mates.
