Outside Hell's Open Gate

Compass me in loving arms,
that I might rest my head.
Desirous of a peaceful thought,
that rest not with the dead.

Could sorrowful mind and tear filled eyes,
blind me from the light on high?
Would I with these mortal hands,
condemn myself to die?

Would death deliver up my soul,
to peace and joy unknown?
Would my soul be tortured there,
so frightened and alone?

Should I find myself upon the path,
leading to a dreadful fate.
Would my soul scream, in fear of pain
Outside Hell's Open Gate?
