One Hell of a Town

She traveled far under ozone skies
Stood in awe under city lights
Left it all for empire heights
She arrived at the station
Sans invitation
All limbs were shaking
We stood side by side
In hope of a ride
We caught one together
2 birds with one stone,
Only the better
Her eyes brought memories of Noah's flood
With pursed lips the shade of boa's blood
She watched the raindrops race,
I watched her angelic face.
I broke the ice with a friendly smile,
Her Red Seas parted, revealing ivory tile
"what's a girl like you doing in New York?"
"huh? Oh looking for work"
"where are you from?"
"Veracruz, a Mexican dump"
"well welcome to the Big Apple,
Don't bite off more than you can chew
This place will try and swallow you
But sink in you're teeth and don't let go
Before you dive, dip your feet
If you're scared, don't let it show"
"wow, thanks. I'll keep that in mind
Why are there so many sheep lining the street?"
"that's a great point, don't ever conform
They sold the wool that kept them warm
Though dressed in shirt, slacks, and tie,
Underneath they're hurt, cracked, and dry
They are not happy; they are slaves
Their lives are quite crappy and can not be saved.
But you can succeed, if you work overtime
Your hands may bleed over time,
But don't let that get you down
This is the land of opportunity
And one hell of a town"
"I've been through a lot and need a fresh start"
"well this is the place if you've got the heart
I can tell that you're tired, there's mud on your hands"
She laughed. "better than blood soaked sand"
"if you're gunna take a stab at city life
Sharpen you're knife"
The cab pulled up to the curb,
she inhaled deeply to calm her nerves
She opened the door and stepped into the street
The air from the sewer crept around her feet
We exchanged smiles, I said " see you around"
She grinned and replied "I hope, but it's one hell of a town"
