Of Flowers and Butterflies

You once had my gentle heart in the palm of your hands,
But you were really not interested; I was just a kind man.

There was a time you owned a monopoly at the back of my mind,
In that era whenever I saw or sat next to you, I'd feel fine.

But all pretty flowers will eventually fade away,
And beautiful butterflies are not meant to stay.

Alas the time had come for us to depart,
And thus the restoration of my broken heart.

But the last time we met there was no goodbye,
And you never said “thanks,” or even “hi.”

So like a beautiful butterfly you just flew away,
And like a pretty flower you will sadly die someday.

But I do not hate you even though you were so cold,
And good conversations with you would never unfold.

I still have a feeling you had a darkened past,
And I hope the storms you faced will fall at last.

I wish you best of luck and plenty of happiness,
But you are no longer my love, or my shining princess.

You are just another flower that the world could bring,
And there are always plenty more that will rise in spring.

The fates may not have conspired for us to unite,
Just like they had planned the stars at night.

In the end I may not deserve a person like you,
I probably deserve better; I'm sorry but it's true.

You were just a beautiful butterfly that has flown astray,
And a pretty little flower that will wither one day.

But I will always keep hope that all could mend,
And perhaps one day, we'll be friends.
