November Mine

(11/18/10)

While waiting out November
for the harvest of my heart,
I envied how love flickered
in the undeserving dark
and wished upon it’s beauty then,
to pull the night apart.

But then the season found a way
to cut the moon in half for me
and made my piece a paramour
that only I could see.
The silhouette of you
where my November came to be.

With all the cold you touched my soul
in a hundred subtle ways.
I felt my heartbeat must have hinted
what my lips would not betray.
At last, the eve that halved November fell
when we began to sway.

And so a breath of fall wrapped ’round us,
like a tangle to untie,
for how you kissed my cheek with purpose
when I pointed out the sky.
The night was smiling at us
as November made you mine.

Jana Satterlund

I wrote my first poem at the age of 10. Although I enjoyed reading and writing poetry, I didn't truly appreciate it until a few years ago. At 21 I started really writing for myself as a release. It has surely become my escape, my late night ritual, my confession. I feel honored to be a part of this community where so many talented poets come together. I appreciate any sentiment and am elated at the opportunity to comment on so many beautiful pieces! more…
