Mama Sang

It's no place to grow up Gay!
Bigotry and ignorance dominate
To stay there is high a price to pay
Because ignorance wills it that way!

But the rugged beauty of these mountains
And the calm of precious mother's love,
Made life in these fields of coal
Endure and produce a radiant glow.

Mama's heart ached for her son, Daniel
Because some treated and abused him
Like a mangy, stray cocker spaniel.
But the taunts only made him stroneger.

Mama died today and I miss her!
My heart aches and I long to see her so.
But, she suffers no longer in pain
Because she is on that glory train.
