Maiden Voyage

Upon the endless seas of sky,
Which stretch from eye to distant eye,
The greatest ships of any hand
Go somberly and stately by.

To some far place they ever make
Yet leave us nothing in their wake
But wisps of wood and fallen sails
That into lesser oceans break.

And if not broken then they sail
Until their burning beacon fail
At which they sink in blood and gold--
To harbors dark and moonlight pale.

Still, by some ancient shipwright's trade
At dawn, again, the ships are bade
Their maiden voyage to repeat
And into cosmic embers fade.
