Longing

I dread the coming of tonight
Because it means I have to turn in my bed
And see an usually empty space
Without your eyes, your face,
Bathed in a sea of darkness
Sometimes your eyes are closed,
Making no sound,
But sometimes they stare at me
Through this quiescent black misery
And your hand feels around until
It finds mine and holds it closely
against your chest
just to let me know
I am not going through this alone
I'm here, I'm here, you seem to say
But you remain silent and instead smile at me
And I can still see you,
I can almost feel you,
Still smiling your charming smile
Even in this empty space,
And then I feel it isn't as dark as I thought
You’ve never left.
You’re still here, all along, after all.
