Life or death @ the water'S edge

LIFE OR DEATH @ THE WATER'S EDGE

  Carnage in a river's rush
red runs the broiling surf
zebra calf, trapped
snapped by jaws, rigid tight
crocodile clamps
with determined might
  chaos at the crossing's edge
zebra run, plunge lemmingly
swarming, scrambling, gambling
at this life or death melee
  to linger begs fatal end
little time to snatch at air
jumping, bucking, kicking, barking
flailing tail, whipping, lashing
darting eyes, trying to capture foe
ears hung back, saliva flows
  swinging tongue
heart thumping as a drum
her senses become engulfed
she wets
  plump lies the crocodile
easy was this master's kill
futile the juvenile wager
watery her bloody graveyard
nothing, nor her creator
would have, could have saved her
