Lakeside Creatures

I sit by a weed with hairy leg-of-spider leaves
and fuzzy eye-of-fly buds
and ignore the orchestra of pebbles
tossed by a ten-year-old,
and played, plippety plop plip,
on the membrane of the lake.

The "quick quick quack" of baby ducks
brings to mind the image of the first human
(and how unique she must have been)
who, seeing a duck for the very first time thought,
"Duck equals food."

Back at the cabin
I find the entrance holds a lone gray spider
Hanging sentinel in the dark doorway,
Commanding respect and a wide berth.
I give her both.
